چکیده

Empirical relations among age, general spatial ability as assessed by psychometric tests, wayfinding-related skills as assessed by experimental tasks in the laboratory, environmental layout learning as assessed in a field experiment, and wayfinding behavior as observed in a field experiment were modeled in a study involving 120 younger and 120 older adults. The best-fitting model showed that age-related differences in learning environmental layout were significantly, but not exclusively, mediated by a single ability factor defined by psychometric tests. Knowledge of environmental layout was the exclusive mediator between general spatial ability and wayfinding behavior. Thus, age differences in psychometric test performance were found to be a major factor in accounting for aging-related decline in learning environmental layout, but other variables not assessed in this study also play a significant role.

Spatial abilities at different scales: Individual differences in aptitude-test performance and spatial-layout learning

Most psychometric tests of spatial ability are paper-and-pencil tasks at the bfiguralQ scale of space, in that they involve inspecting, imagining or mentally transforming small shapes or manipulable objects. Environmental spatial tasks, such as wayfinding or learning the layout of a building or city, are carried out in larger spaces that surround the body and involve integration of the sequence...

Sex Differences in Using Spatial and Verbal Abilities Influence Route Learning Performance in a Virtual Environment: A Comparison of 6- to 12-Year Old Boys and Girls

Previous studies have reported sex differences in wayfinding performance among adults. Men are typically better at using Euclidean information and survey strategies while women are better at using landmark information and route strategies. However, relatively few studies have examined sex differences in wayfinding in children. This research investigated relationships between route learning perf...

Age-Related Differences and Cognitive Correlates of Self-Reported and Direct Navigation Performance: The Effect of Real and Virtual Test Conditions Manipulation

The present study investigated the effect of aging on direct navigation measures and self-reported ones according to the real-virtual test manipulation. Navigation (wayfinding tasks) and spatial memory (paper-pencil tasks) performances, obtained either in real-world or in virtual-laboratory test conditions, were compared between young (n = 32) and older (n = 32) adults who had self-rated their ...

Wayfinding behavior and spatial knowledge of adults and children in a virtual environment: The role of landmarks.

This study investigated the effect of different organizations of landmark-location pairings as fine-space information on wayfinding behavior and spatial knowledge on a total of 90 participants: 30 second graders, 30 sixth graders, and 30 adults. All participants had to find their way to a goal in a virtual environment with either randomized or categorical landmarks, or without any landmarks. Th...

Age-Related Wayfinding Differences in Real Large-Scale Environments: Detrimental Motor Control Effects during Spatial Learning Are Mediated by Executive Decline?

The aim of this study was to evaluate motor control activity (active vs. passive condition) with regards to wayfinding and spatial learning difficulties in large-scale spaces for older adults. We compared virtual reality (VR)-based wayfinding and spatial memory (survey and route knowledge) performances between 30 younger and 30 older adults. A significant effect of age was obtained on the wayfi...
